Chinese pop idol Jason Zhang’s performance at the Beijing National Stadium for his Yao Beidou tour was captured by an ARRI Multicam System featuring 12 AMIRA and ALEXA cameras. The live concert was attended by 150,000 fans in China and marked the culmination of the singer’s tour.

Director and cinematographer, Liu Rui, was responsible for the onsite broadcast of the large-scale concert. To translate the show’s electrifying atmosphere into live entertainment images, he elected to use ARRI’s 12-channel Multicam System with 10 AMIRAs and two ALEXA Minis. The onsite production work was carried out by a team from Shiji HanTang Film and Television Group, led by technical director Lu Bei.

“The system has significant advantages such as its tolerance, noise control and detail rendering, as well as its postproduction capabilities,” explained Rui. “What also surprised us during the live performance was that we were able to restore many details that were previously unattainable with regular broadcasting cameras.”

The team was able to directly record in-camera footage for postproduction, refinement or special effects such as slow-motion, utilising standard production environments such as OB vans or studios with the ARRI Multicam System to transmit HD or UHD/4K signals in real time.

At the live concert, the production team adopted a cinematic production process based on the ARRI Log C signal, with Lui nothing that with this workflow, the team preserved more details, tolerance and better noise control. “It provided a lot of possibilities. It also meant we had more room for choices and style changes in postproduction,” he explained.

Bei commented on using the Log C workflow: “The technical aspects were quite simple. You just connected all your signals to ensure safety and stability for live broadcasting. I think this is an excellent solution to handle the technical challenge of balancing 4K HDR with HD SDR live broadcasts.”

Also known as The Bird’s Nest, the onsite production work at the Beijing National Stadium was supported by Per Zachariassen who is the founder of the CuePilot production system which the team used to improve production efficiency and provide optimised visuals on big screens. “The system is mainly used for meticulous planning of the camera shots. For the performance at The Bird’s Nest, we combined it with the ARRI AMIRA to leverage the AMIRA’s superior visual performance,” concluded Liu.
