First Baptist Church gets second renovation in 100 years
Paragon 360 recently completed a full scope renovation for First Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky. The project included the installation of audio, video and lighting systems, with Paragon’s partner, Torgerson Design Partners (TDP), engaged for the project’s architectural aspects.
As the project was only the second renovation of the 100-year-old worship centre, the objective was to update the experience in the main sanctuary and improve the online experience while still maintaining the space’s architectural beauty. Two key considerations were also to improve connection to the lobby and improve the overall first-time guest experience.
In terms of audio, Paragon designed and installed new systems that included a NEXO loudspeaker system with Fulcrum subs and JBL front fills, with Allen & Heath consoles implemented for mixing and personal monitoring. The system included hearing assist systems, wireless IEMs, custom equipment racks and Paragon’s signature choir monitor system to improve the choir experience.
For video, two Revelux StoryGlass LED walls with custom surrounds were installed as well as robotic cameras and various production equipment. Pargon also facilitated an enlargement of the existing video production booth. The system also included a distributed, digital signage system. The video’s audio system featured an Allen & Heath console and JBL monitoring, separating the online mix from the FOH mix.
Chauvet Ovation fixtures were implemented for the platform LED lighting system, with control provided by a High End Systems Hedge Hog console in addition to ETC relay panels and architectural control button stations. Additionally, several new motorised lighting positions were created using standard truss and CM loadstar motors with cable management via Pantograph systems. Custom scenic and architectural elements contained LED lighting by Environmental Lighting. Furthermore, LED house lighting was designed and installed using Pathway Lighting products.
The interior design for the project was provided by Paragon’s team who created modifications to the main platform to provide more usable space within the existing footprint. To modernise the look of the platform and tie elements from the back wall into the main platform, Paragon’s custom illuminated scenic and architectural elements were used. Back wall baptistery surrounds, a Halo lit wooden cross, modesty walls, a front of stage façade and a custom drum enclosure were also custom designed and built for the sanctuary.
Following a comprehensive audio and acoustical analysis during the design process, Paragon designed and supplied over 370m2 of acoustical material and Fabri-TRAK, installed on the side and back walls above and below the balcony and on the balcony face. The project also included new seating and the removal of pews replaced with individual Sauder Vista theatre seats with pew end caps.
Bob Farmer, business administrator for FBC Owensboro, commented: "Our experience working with Paragon was absolutely amazing. We were a team.”
