Munro upgrades Khar Social with hybrid Void and custom system
Munro Acoustics has completed a sound reinforcement upgrade at Khar Social in Mumbai, deploying a new Void Acoustics system while also demonstrating its growing loudspeaker design capabilities through the installation of bespoke fill loudspeakers developed inhouse.
The venue, part of the popular Social chain whose 60-plus branches are operated throughout India by Impresario Entertainment and Hospitality, has established itself as one of Mumbai's busiest destinations for DJs, live performances and high-energy nightlife.
The installation was carried out by Munro Acoustics, which has worked closely with the Social brand on multiple projects and was engaged to modernise the venue's audio infrastructure. According to Social’s technical manager Gaurav Waghdhare, who oversees the AV systems across the brand's 17 Mumbai locations, the venue’s previous sound system had been in continuous operation for almost a decade.
“We had an older system here for around 10 years,” he explained. “The venue runs every day, offering co-working spaces throughout the day and transitioning into late-night DJ performances in the evenings, so it was time for an upgrade.”
The decision to move to Void Acoustics followed discussions between Social’s management and Munro Acoustics director Kapil Thirwani after company executives experienced the manufacturer's systems elsewhere in Asia. Supplied by exclusive Indian distributor Acoustic Arts, which also provided the Powersoft amplification and control, a pair of Void Air Motion loudspeakers in red above the DJ booth each feature three transducers loaded with an isometric conical horn, with enough power to cover the entire ground floor without a delay system. The Air Motions are powered by a Powersoft Quattrocanali 2404 amp and are supported by two large-format Void Stasys 218 subwoofers powered by a Powersoft Duecanali 6404 amp. A Powersoft WM Touch wall-mounted touchscreen has been provided for control and music distribution, with a Powersoft Verso for remote system management. The result is a significantly more powerful and coherent audio experience for the venue's DJ-led programme, which attracts crowds of up to 300 people on busy weekends.
Following an extensive tuning and optimisation process, the system has quickly gained acceptance among visiting artists and DJs. “We spent quite a few days on EQ and optimisation, and now it's running perfectly,” said Waghdhare. “All the DJs are enjoying it.”
A notable aspect of the installation is Munro Acoustics’ inclusion of custom loudspeakers which extend coverage to the venue’s mezzanine level. Developed by the company itself as part of its new, bespoke Vitruvian Architechtura line, the 2-way horn speakers have been designed to integrate with the Void system, providing additional coverage to audience areas without compromising tonal consistency, and are powered by a Powersoft Mezzo 602 compact amp.
The project represents another step in Munro Acoustics’ evolution from consultancy and systems integration into loudspeaker development. By designing purpose-built products for challenging applications, the company is increasingly able to deliver tailored solutions beyond conventional off-the-shelf offerings.
With additional Social venues coming up across India, including a new location planned for Mohali in the Punjab, the success of the Khar Social installation may signal wider adoption of the newly adopted systems across the Social group.
