Renkus-Heinz improves clarity at London Cathedral
Saint Sophia's Greek Orthodox Cathedral in London's Bayswater district has upgraded its sound system with a Renkus-Heinz system designed to improve speech intelligibility while preserving the character of the historic worship space.
Also known as the Cathedral of Divine Wisdom, the cathedral attracts hundreds of worshippers and visitors each week. However, its previous audio system struggled to deliver clear speech, with congregants frequently reporting difficulty hearing services. The building's extensive marble interior and highly reflective surfaces presented a significant acoustic challenge.
Systems integrator API Sound & Visual worked with distributor CUK Group to design a dedicated speech reinforcement system capable of providing consistent coverage throughout the cathedral.
“When I first walked into the cathedral, its beauty was immediately striking,” noted Stephen Neath, sales director at API Sound & Visual. “But in a space of this scale, dominated by hard marble surfaces, sound reflects endlessly. It was imperative that the system was highly directional, focusing audio precisely where people are seated; otherwise, the spoken word would simply be lost.”
The installation centres on two Renkus-Heinz UBX16 loudspeakers serving as the main L-R sources, supported by four UBX8 loudspeakers used for side coverage and delay fill duties. Compact Powersoft amplifiers were specified to drive the system, while a wall-mounted control interface allows staff to recall preset operating modes during services.
CUK Group supported the design process with EASE Focus modelling to verify coverage and optimise loudspeaker placement before installation. A demonstration was also conducted for cathedral staff prior to the project proceeding.
Given the heritage status of the building, installation required careful consideration. Existing fixing points were reused to avoid alterations to the cathedral's marble surfaces, while the loudspeakers' discreet appearance helped minimise visual impact.
Following commissioning and subsequent system tuning, the cathedral has reported a significant improvement in speech clarity throughout the worship space.
“The success of this project has already given us the confidence to specify UBX Series loudspeakers on another church installation,” concluded Neath. “Their ability to deliver wide, controlled coverage from a remarkably compact enclosure makes them an ideal choice for houses of worship.”
