Elation fixtures light Morocco’s DGSN anniversary
Elation lighting fixtures played a key role in the production of Morocco’s 70th anniversary celebrations for the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) in Rabat which was attended by thousands of guests and broadcast to wider audiences.
Taking place on the Atlantic coastline in May, the large-scale outdoor event combined ceremonial and parade elements with a contemporary show production approach, transforming the annual celebration into a broadcast-ready spectacle. Lighting design was handled by Concept K, led by lighting, set and multimedia designer Frédéric “Aldo” Fayard, working alongside artistic director Stéphane Thiodat of SC Production.
To deliver the production, Concept K utilised an extensive Elation lighting package supplied by Novelty / Dushow Group, including 155 Proteus Maximus fixtures, 78 Proteus Hybrid luminaires and 160 Sōl I Blinders.
Concept K was responsible for the lighting design, programming and deployment, as well as laser and fountain effects. The production site incorporated a main stage, six towers and a large guest tent, supporting a parade featuring police units, vehicles, mounted divisions and canine teams.
According to Fayard, the first challenge was the sheer scale of the show: “We had to illuminate an area equivalent to two football fields filled with people, vehicles, horses and military equipment. At the same time, we needed to provide sufficient brightness for the thousands of VIP guests and meet the requirements of the broadcast team and their cameras. It was essential to highlight and enhance the police forces during this important 70th anniversary celebration.”
Due to its proximity to the ocean, the outdoor location presented additional challenges such as exposing equipment to dust and moisture. To combat this, weatherproof fixtures formed a key part of the specification.
“We needed fixtures that were completely dust-tight and waterproof,” Fayard confirmed. “For key and side lighting, we were looking for a very powerful fixture with narrow zoom capable of covering long distances.”
Fayard added that the Proteus Maximus fixtures met the project’s requirements for output, coverage and environmental protection, while the Proteus Hybrid luminaires provided beam and spot effects across the site.
“We’ve worked with the Proteus Hybrid many times before,” Aldo noted. “Its IP65 rating and true hybrid functionality were its key criteria. There are very few fixtures capable of delivering both beam and spot performance while also offering the reliability needed for outdoor events.”
The production also made extensive use of 160 Sōl I Blinders for backlighting, effects, colour rendering and visual accents throughout the show. “It’s lightweight, easy to rig, efficient, RGBLAW, offers a wide beam angle, carries an IP65 rating and delivers exceptional value,” Fayard noted. “The Sōl I is a true multitool – we love it.”
