SMPTE opens standards library to industry
SMPTE has made its entire Standards catalogue freely accessible, opening access to all published Standards, Recommended Practices, Engineering Guidelines and Registered Disclosure Documents (RDDs) for the global media technology community.
The move removes a longstanding barrier to access and is expected to support wider adoption of SMPTE standards across broadcast, media production and entertainment technology sectors. Future standards publications will also be made available free of charge.
According to SMPTE, the decision is intended to strengthen interoperability across the industry at a time when organisations are navigating major technology transitions, including IP-based workflows, artificial intelligence and content provenance.
“This was a decision we did not make lightly,” said Rich Welsh, president of SMPTE. “Our industry is confronting transformative shifts, from IP-based workflows to AI authenticity and content provenance, and we find ourselves at another inflection point.”
The launch of the open access library forms part of a broader modernisation programme within SMPTE's standards development operations. Recent initiatives include the adoption of GitHub-based workflows for version control and issue tracking, the transition to HTML-based authoring and the implementation of an integrated publishing system designed to streamline document creation and release.
SMPTE Standards vice president Raymond Yeung said the move would help remove barriers to implementation while improving transparency throughout the standards development process.
For broadcasters, manufacturers, systems integrators and technology developers across APAC, access to the full catalogue provides a direct reference source for standards governing media transport, production and distribution workflows. The initiative is also expected to benefit emerging markets and educational institutions by making technical specifications more widely available.
The open-access programme is supported by several of SMPTE's diamond-level corporate members, including Amazon AWS, Apple, Blackmagic Design, CBS/Paramount Global, Disney, Dolby, Fox, Google, Ross Video, Sony and Telstra.
