Brompton powers Chengdu Film City's flagship VP studio
Brompton Technology's Tessera LED processing platform has been deployed at the newly opened Chengdu Film City VP Studio (CDFC VP Studio), which is reported to be one of the largest and most advanced virtual production (VP) facilities in Asia.
Located within Chengdu Film City in China's Sichuan Province, the 5,000m² studio is built around an 820m² LED volume featuring a 60m-wide, 12m-high curved LED wall and a 100m² motorised LED ceiling. The installation comprises 3,240 AOTO RM2.3S LED panels, creating a 360° VP environment with a 180° shooting angle and an automated rotating turntable spanning more than 1,100m². Camera tracking is provided by RedSpy and WatcherX systems, with real-time rendering integrated into a VP workflow developed alongside Tencent Interactive Entertainment's Content Ecosystem Division.
The LED volume is driven by 48 Brompton Tessera SX40 LED processors and 96 Tessera XD 10G data distribution units, supporting the demands of large-scale, real-time virtual production.
Among the platform's key features are ShutterSync, which removes scan lines and phasing artefacts when filming LED displays, Dynamic Calibration for improved HDR performance and shadow detail, and OSCA (On-Screen Colour Adjustment), which enables per-panel colour and brightness control across the 60m-wide curved wall. The system also supports 3D LUTs, allowing cinematographers and colourists to apply on-set colour grading directly at the display level without altering the source content.
The facility is designed to streamline production workflows by allowing environments to be changed instantly, reducing the need for location shooting while enabling directors and production teams to review final composite images in real time during filming.
“This is one of the most ambitious virtual production deployments we've been involved with in Asia,” said Elijah Ebo, director of APAC operations at Brompton Technology. “The scale of the CDFC VP Studio, including the arc length of the LED wall, the motorised ceiling and the rotating stage, creates a genuinely demanding processing environment. Having 48 SX40s working simultaneously across this volume is a real statement of where virtual production infrastructure is heading and we're proud that Tessera is at the core of it.”
CDFC VP Studio opened as part of the Chengdu Digital Intelligence Studio Complex, coinciding with the 13th China Network Audio-Visual Conference. Located within the 16.5km² Chengdu Film City media park, the facility forms part of a growing production hub that is home to more than 600 film, television and creative enterprises.
