YoloBox streamlines aviation live production
YoloBox has been deployed by aviation streamer Kevin Eagles to simplify mobile live production for Wellington Flights Live in New Zealand, replacing a laptop-based OBS workflow with the manufacturer’s YoloBox Extreme.
Eagles previously relied on a gaming laptop with high-end graphics processing, an HDMI capture card and a large external battery to stream aircraft movements from Wellington Airport. The system required a large table, extensive cabling and up to an hour to set up, while the capture card limited the workflow to a single camera.
“I also needed a large heavy battery and a big table for it all. So many random cables and a lot of heavy equipment to lug around and up to an hour to set up,” said Eagles.
The move to YoloBox Extreme has reduced setup time by around half while expanding the production capabilities available from the airport. Eagles can operate multiple cameras, record streams in 4K, replay aircraft landings and switch between sources using YoloDeck, YoloBox’s physical control surface.
“The YoloBox Extreme has revolutionised my stream. Suddenly I have a light setup with ability to replay landings, easily play music and zoom into my shot for extra close ups and easily record my stream in 4K,” said Eagles.
Eagles typically uses three cameras: a static wide shot, a roaming zoom camera for tracking aircraft and a selfie camera. A fourth camera can also be added to bring his King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Romeo, into the stream as a picture-in-picture source.
The portable system is built around the YoloBox Extreme, mounted in a cage on a Leofoto LS-365C Ranger tripod. Camera sources include a Panasonic HC-X1500 and Sony ZV-E1, with Sony G-Master 70-200mm and Sigma 60-600mm Sports lenses providing additional reach for aircraft tracking.
Audio is handled by a Rode Rodecaster Pro II, Rode NTG1 microphone and Audio-Technica BPHS2 broadcast headset. A Microsoft Surface Laptop and Samsung S23 Ultra complete the wider setup.
A key part of the workflow is the YoloBox Extreme’s SRT capability. Eagles sends the stream to a home PC running a custom website overlay, enabling additional production elements without requiring the corresponding infrastructure at the airport.
The system also supports NDI camera integration, 4K recording and direct camera switching through YoloDeck.
“The YoloBox Extreme has been awesome for my channel and saves time with setup as well. I can stay a little longer at the airport and do a longer stream,” concluded Eagles.
