L-Acoustics L2 leads Zouk Singapore audio rebuild
Singapore nightclub Zouk has reopened its three rooms at Clarke Quay following a phased rebuild featuring new L-Acoustics sound systems supplied and installed by Concept Systems Technologies.
The Main Room now features Singapore’s first L2 club installation, comprising a single L2D hang per side, while Phuture and Capital use A Series and X Series systems. The three rooms can operate independently or be opened into a single space accommodating up to 3,500 people.
Zouk, which opened in 1991 and has been a fixture of DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs for two decades, began rebuilding all three rooms in 2024. The brief extended beyond DJ playback to accommodate live bands, concerts and corporate events. “The brief was to deliver the low-end impact and high SPL capability a leading nightclub demands,” explained James Pithouse, senior engineer at Concept Systems. “At the same time, they wanted it to hold consistent coverage across rooms that also host performances by live bands.”
The Main Room presented the biggest installation challenge, with a low ceiling and fixed mounting points restricting loudspeaker placement. According to the team, a single L2D per side provided the required output from a short hang, while Panflex directivity was used to shape horizontal coverage.
“It gave us the performance, coverage and output the Main Room needed, within a footprint that was far more restrictive than a typical install,” noted Pithouse. “That it also became the first L2 club installation in Singapore was a bonus.”
The Main Room system also includes six KS28 subs, four X12s for DJ and MC positions, A15i fills and a combination of A10i and X8i delays, with two SB18 subs supporting the delay system. Phuture uses three A15i Wide per side, four KS21i subs and X12 fills and delays, while Capital employs distributed A10i Wide hangs and KS21i subs. Its bar area adds 11 X8i loudspeakers and four SB15m subs. An L-Acoustics P1 processor handles format conversion across the installation, which is networked via Milan-AVB.
Concept Systems used Soundvision to model coverage, SPL and loudspeaker interaction before installation, with final aiming and calibration completed with support from the L-Acoustics applications team. The project was delivered in two phases to keep the venue operational, with Capital completed first over eight weeks, followed by a 10-week phase covering the Main Room and Phuture.
“This was an exciting and technically demanding install across three very different rooms and in a live venue that couldn’t afford to go dark or silent,” noted Pithouse. “Seeing it all come together, and hearing the difference it's made across the board, has been hugely rewarding for the whole team.”
