Meyer Sound appoints McMahon as COO
Meyer Sound has appointed John McMahon as chief operating officer, formalising a broader leadership remit as the company enters a new phase of international growth.
McMahon, who joined the loudspeaker manufacturer in 2006 following its acquisition of Level Control Systems, already oversees sales and marketing, R&D and operations, and has been part of the executive team since 2008.
“We push our products to perform at an extremely high level and we’re pushing ourselves to perform at that same level from a business perspective,” noted McMahon. “That means the way we operate has to scale with where we’re growing.”
McMahon’s early work at Meyer Sound focused on digital engineering, including technologies behind the company’s Constellation acoustic system. In his expanded role, he will take a more organisation-wide view while continuing to oversee the functions that report to him. “Honestly, the day-to-day doesn’t dramatically change,” he said. “What changes is the scope – I can spend more time across R&D and operations and take a more organisation-wide view.”
As COO, he will work closely with cofounders John Meyer and Helen Meyer, who remain involved in the company’s strategic direction and daily operations, with McHahon responsible for implementing the execution of that strategy across the business. “I’ve always thought of myself as a synthesizer,” noted McMahon. “We have experts across this company and my job is to bring their thinking together and help the pieces fit.”
It was also reported that, as part of the evolving structure, the manufacturer is recruiting a vice president of sales and marketing.
The appointment comes as Meyer Sound expands its international presence. Earlier this year, the company announced a new 4,500m2 Shanghai facility, a wholly owned subsidiary that will manufacture its top-selling loudspeakers for the Chinese market using the same processes and quality controls as its Berkeley headquarters.
“I’m excited about the energy we’re unlocking in Asia and the response to Shanghai has reached well beyond China,” concluded McMahon. “This is a growth phase for the company.”
