OnlyCproduction installs Vietnam’s first SSL Origin
Ho Chi Minh City-based producer OnlyC has installed Vietnam’s first Solid State Logic (SSL) Origin 32-channel analogue mixing console, adding the platform to the hybrid workflow at his OnlyCproduction facility.
Established in 2013 and relocated to a new building in the Lakeview City villa area of District 2 in 2022, OnlyCproduction provides recording, mixing and mastering services for artists, film companies, record labels and commercial brands.
OnlyC primarily uses the Origin for mixing, integrating the console into a hybrid workflow that combines analogue summing and processing with plug-ins running in DAWs including Pro Tools and Reaper.
“I've always appreciated the sonic character of SSL and after researching the Origin, I felt it was the right choice for my studio. For me, SSL is one of the leading choices in professional music production,” he said.
OnlyC was already familiar with SSL processing, using equipment including the G-Series Bus Compressor, The Bus+, Fusion and BiG SiX. He says the Origin has subsequently delivered the analogue character and workflow he was looking for.
“The EQ is clean yet retains a strong analogue character,” explained OnlyC. “The built-in G Series Bus Compressor is excellent – punchy, cohesive and very musical. Overall, the sound is punchy and clean, with a solid stereo image, great depth in the summing bus and a strong sense of glue and space in the mix.”
The console’s routing and grouping capabilities have also proved important to his workflow. “The routing on the SSL Origin is excellent – intuitive, flexible, and very inspiring to work with,” he said, adding that he makes full use of its 16 subgroups and eight stereo mix buses to create instrument buses.
OnlyC also highlighted the Origin’s 242 E Series EQ, G Series Bus Compressor and PureDrive mic preamp feature as key tools in his productions.
Since taking delivery from SSL Asia, the console has been used across numerous productions. OnlyC said its presence has helped streamline work with Vietnamese artists and international record companies. “Since installing the SSL Origin, many top Vietnamese artists who have worked at OnlyCproduction have been very satisfied with both the sound and the workflow,” he concluded.
