AEQ OLYMPIA3 commentator units have been installed in the press cabins at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, providing a combined commentator and intercom solution for sports broadcasting operations.
Located on Yas Island, the 5,554m circuit has hosted the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix since 2009, alongside events including the FIA GT1 World Championship, V8 Supercars and the Gulf 12 Hours.
The installation incorporates OLYMPIA3, which combines commentator unit functions with digital and IP-based technologies. The system is designed to support both large-scale events with hundreds of commentator positions and smaller production environments.
A key feature is the ability to operate as both a commentator unit and an intercom panel. The Commentator 1 channel incorporates the functions and signalling required to operate as an intercom panel compatible with AEQ intercom systems, eliminating the need for a separate panel at the commentator position. The dual functionality allows a single position to support different production and communication tasks, with the configuration adaptable to the requirements of individual events. OLYMPIA3 also features a hybrid control system, combining local operation with remote management of commentator functions.
AEQ’s OLYMPIA3-CU-CONTROL software allows units to be configured and managed remotely. This enables production teams to adapt each position to specific requirements, while intercom functions on the Commentator 1 channel remain under local control when that channel is operating as an intercom panel.
Each commentator can independently select and listen to the audio sources required for their work. A video source can also be selected as a common reference for all three commentators, providing a shared visual reference alongside individually managed audio.
The installation at Yas Marina Circuit demonstrates the use of OLYMPIA3 in a major motorsport venue, combining commentator and intercom functions in a single unit while supporting IP-based production infrastructure.
