Riedel connects ECU’s live production facilities
Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth has integrated Riedel Communications technology across its broadcast facilities and theatre spaces, giving students practical experience of professional live production workflows.
The infrastructure centres on two Riedel Artist-1024 nodes, used by the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and the university’s broadcast department. Bolero wireless intercom allows stage managers and directors to move between event areas while maintaining communication with production teams.
MediorNet provides the backbone for audio and video distribution, using five MicroN UHD units and an additional mobile unit. The system supports signal transmission across the building and outside broadcasts where fibre connectivity is available. MediorNet HorizoN connects traditional SDI and MediorNet infrastructure with ST 2110 workflows, allowing two broadcasts to run independently while integrating theatre productions into the broadcast environment.
“Our partnership with Riedel has significantly transformed communications and coordination across our venues,” commented Richard Reddrop, associate professor and associate dean (production and design) at WAAPA. “Stage managers, front-of-house teams, technicians, backstage crews and production staff are now able to work together through a single integrated communications platform, creating a more connected and professional operating environment. Importantly, it provides our students with the experience of industry-standard workflows and technologies that reflect contemporary professional practice.”
ECU also operates three Riedel SimplyLive RiCapture servers, including two systems for 4K workflows and one dedicated to teaching. Students and instructors can record up to six video streams simultaneously, alongside production communications, then replay recordings to review decisions and identify issues. Teaching sessions can also be recorded for later use in course materials.
The combined systems are designed to support different production formats while allowing students to review their work in a professional-style environment.
“Artist, Bolero, MediorNet and SimplyLive create a learning environment here at ECU that can be ideally adapted to the students’ needs as well as to various production formats,” said Chris Johnson, director Oceania at Riedel Communications. “Students are thus given the opportunity to experiment and work in a practical environment that mirrors real-world production workflows.”
