Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre connects with Riedel
A Riedel MediorNet video infrastructure alongside an intercom ecosystem built around the Artist platform has been deployed at Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre in Victoria, Australia, to support its broadcast and production workflows. The venue – located directly on Geelong’s waterfront – comprises the 1,000-seat Wala Mirr Theatre, approximately 3,700m2 of flexible event space and a suite of divisible breakout rooms.
A dedicated, high-bandwidth layer based on Riedel MediorNet supports the venue’s broadcast requirements. Fibre connectivity extends throughout the facility, enabling 12G-SDI signals to be transported between production areas and the MediorNet infrastructure. Cameras can be connected locally and their signals transported over fibre, while a MicroN UHD can be deployed directly in an event space to provide a local connection point into the wider MediorNet network.
The infrastructure also provides a direct path to visiting outside broadcast facilities. A dedicated 24-core single-mode fibre connection runs to the venue’s satellite truck position, enabling signals on the MediorNet network to be made available at the OB patch. For broadcasters already operating within the MediorNet ecosystem, their production infrastructure can connect to the venue network over fibre, simplifying the exchange of signals between the building and the truck.
“For us, MediorNet is one of the highest-bandwidth, self-healing networked SDI transport systems available today,” said Michael Walker, senior manager of audiovisual at Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre. “It allows us to bring 12G-SDI signals into the network anywhere in the building where we have fibre. We can bring individual camera signals back to the central infrastructure, deploy a MicroN UHD locally in the room or integrate a broadcaster’s MediorNet-equipped truck over fibre. That gives us a great deal of flexibility in how we support each production.”
For production communications, Nyaal Banyul uses a Riedel intercom ecosystem built around Artist and combining Bolero wireless intercom, PunQtum partyline intercom and Riedel SmartPanels. Sixteen Bolero antennas provide coverage across the venue’s indoor and outdoor areas, with 36 Bolero beltpacks available onsite. In the Wala Mirr Theatre, Artist, PunQtum and SmartPanels complement the wireless Bolero infrastructure. Together, the systems enable technical teams, clients and production personnel to remain connected as they move and work throughout the facility.
“Nyaal Banyul is a strong example of how an integrated video and communications infrastructure can support the very different requirements of a modern event venue,” said Chris Johnson, director Oceania at Riedel Communications. “MediorNet gives the team the flexibility to move broadcast signals wherever they are needed across the venue, while the Artist intercom ecosystem brings together wired and wireless communications for technical teams and customer production crews across the site. Together, they provide a flexible foundation for a wide range of live event and broadcast workflows.”
