Brompton powers Tokyo VP volume
An LED wall, configurable LED ceiling and movable side walls form the centrepiece of Crescent’s Digi-Cast Haneda Studio in Tokyo, where Brompton Technology’s Tessera platform provides the processing infrastructure for virtual production (VP).
The main wall measures 41.5m x10m (WxH), while two movable 6m x 6m side walls and an approximately 23.5m x 15m LED ceiling complete the display environment. Divided into nine independently height-adjustable sections, the ceiling can be reconfigured to suit different production requirements.
The main wall uses Auo LED panels with a 1.95mm pixel pitch and a brightness of 2,000 nits. The side walls use AUO P3.9 panels, while P5.2 panels are installed in the ceiling. Processing is handled by 27 Brompton Tessera 4K SX40 LED processors and 57 Tessera XD 10G data distribution units.
According to Crescent technical director Kota Kikuya, when the team were designing the studio, a key requirement was an LED processing platform with a proven track record and flexibility. “Brompton’s Tessera platform is well established across the industry, but equally important for us is its API-based control, which allows us to build workflows around our own production needs,” noted Kikuya. “The colour management options, including LiveGrade integration and 3D LUT application, give our team the flexibility required across a wide range of productions.”
The LED volume forms part of Crescent’s “Link-All” concept, which brings VP together with motion capture, volumetric video and photogrammetry. The technologies are designed to work together in real time, with workflows spanning previsualisation and technical visualisation, scene and asset creation, and filming.
The development comprises separate LED stage and production buildings, extending the facility beyond a standalone VP stage. Television drama series and streaming video projects are among the productions planned for Digi-Cast Haneda Studio.
“With one of the world’s largest LED volumes at its heart, Digi-Cast Haneda Studio is a hugely impressive facility, both in its scale and in the flexibility it offers production teams,” concluded Elijah Ebo, director of APAC operations at Brompton Technology. “We’re delighted that Crescent has chosen Tessera SX40 and Tessera XD for such an ambitious project and it is particularly exciting to see the team using Tessera’s API control and advanced colour-management capabilities to tailor the system around its own production requirements.”
